    REGULATION FOR DOUBLE MAJOR PROGRAMS


     

    Purpose

    Article 1-(1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SK 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)The purpose of the Double Major Program is to ensure that students who successfully carry out their major associate and undergraduate programs can receive a second associate and undergraduate diploma by taking courses concurrently with the major associate and undergraduate programs.

     

    Scope

    Article 2- (1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SK 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)This Regulation includes provisions regarding student applications, admissions, registration, and education concerning the double major associate and undergraduate programs conducted at Izmir university of Economics.

     

    Definitions

    Article 3- (1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SK 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) The references in this regulation are as follows:

    a) ECTS: European Credit Transfer System,

    b) Head of Department: Heads of associate and undergraduate departments at Izmir University of Economics,

    c) DMP: Izmir University of Economics second major, double major program,

    ç) DMP Coordinator: The lecturer assigned to determine the courses to be taken by the students in the Double Major Program and to assist in planning the semesters in which these courses will be taken.

    d) GPA:Grade Point Average,

    e)  Faculty/School/Vocational School Board Concerned: Boards of faculties/schools/vocational schools affiliated to Izmir University of Economics,

    f) Faculty/School/ Vocational School Administrative Board Concerned: Administrative boards of faculties/schools/vocational schools affiliated to Izmir University of Economics,

    g) Vocational School Director: Director of Vocational School within Izmir University of Economics.

    ğ) Board of Trustees: The Board of Trustees of Izmir University of Economics,

    h) Senate: The Senate of Izmir University of Economics,

    ı) University/IUE: Izmir University of Economics,

    i) MP: Izmir University of Economics minor program,

    j) School Director: Director of School within Izmir University of Economics.

     

    Basis

    Article 4- (1)  (Changed 10.03.2021 SK 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) This Regulation has been prepared on the basis of provisions of IUE "Regulation for Associate and Undergraduate Degree Education and Examinations”, which took effect after being published in the Official Gazette No. 28536, dated 22 January 2013, and the Regulation for Student Transfer Between Associate Degree and Bachelor's Degree Programs, Double Major and Minor Programs and Course Credit Transfers Between Institutions of Higher Education published in the Official Gazette No. 27561, dated 24 April 2010.

     

    Double Major Program (DMP)

    Article 5- (1A) (Added 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Double major programs can be opened between associate degree programs and other associate degree programs, and between undergraduate programs and other undergraduate programs. Undergraduate students cannot do double major in associate degree programs; associate degree students cannot do double major in undergraduate programs.

     

    (1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Courses to be taken in DMP consist of all courses aside from the ones the student has taken in the major program, which are deemed as equivalent, provided that they are not less than 60 ECTS in associate programs, and not less than 75 ECTS in undergraduate programs. Semester GPA and cumulative GPA are calculated separately.

     

    (2) When determining the courses, the student needs to take in DMP, their credits, and equivalent courses, the higher education area competencies indicated by the Council of Higher Education, are taken into consideration.

     

    (3) The DMP concerned needs to be designed to allow the student to gain the learning outcomes identified according to the minimum knowledge, skills, and competencies the student needs to gain at the end of the program.

     

    (4) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)The education period of a double major program is the maximum period, as specified in clause (c) of Article 44 of Law No.2547, starting from the academic year the student has enrolled in the DMP. This period in 2-year associate programs is 4 years, in 4-year undergraduate programs is 7 years.

     

    DMP Quotas

    Article 6- (1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)Quotas for Double Major Programs are set by the Senate upon the recommendation of the faculty/school/vocational school boards concerned.

     

    (2) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)The annual number of new students to be admitted to DMP and MP are determined by the Senate upon the recommendation of faculty/school/vocational school boards on the condition that the quota of double major programs (excluding law, medicine, health, and engineering programs) cannot be less than 20% of the quota of the programs.

     

    Application and Terms of Admission

    Article 7-(1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Students must be at the beginning of their second semester earliest, or at the beginning of their third semester latest in their major associate program, and at the beginning of their third semester earliest, or at the beginning of their fifth semester latest in their major undergraduate program, to be eligible to apply to DMP.

     

    (2A) (Added 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) In DMP applications to programs with a compulsory foreign language program from Turkish-medium programs, candidates must be successful in the foreign language proficiency exam to be held by IUE, or they must have obtained a score at the level of success determined in national or internationally valid foreign language exams recognized by the Council of Higher Education. Applications of candidates who do not meet foreign language proficiency are considered invalid.

     

    (2) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)The application quotas and terms are announced by the faculties/schools/vocational schools before the application dates, and applications are taken on the dates specified in the academic calendar.

     

    (3) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)To be eligible for a Double Major Program, a student must meet the following terms:

    a) (Added 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)In associate programs, student must take and successfully pass courses with at least 25 ECTS at the end of the fall semester, and at least 50 ECTS at the end of spring semester of freshman year; obtain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 over 4.00; and be in the top 20% of the class ranking in the major associate program.

    b) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) In undergraduate programs, student must take and successfully pass courses with at least 50 ECTS at the end of the spring semester of freshman year, with at least 75 ECTS at the end of fall semester of sophomore year, and with at least 110 ECTS at the end of the spring semester of sophomore year; obtain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 over 4.00; and be in the top 20% of the class ranking in the major undergraduate program.

     

    (4) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Students, who have taken and succeeded in all anticipated courses in the major program and obtained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 over 4.00, however, could not make it to the top 20% of the class ranking in the major associate and undergraduate program, can apply for DMP if they obtained points equal to or higher than the base point of the DMP in the respective year.

     

    (5) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Student, who wants to do DMP in undergraduate programs requiring success rating, needs to meet the success rating requirement indicated by the Council of Higher Education in the year he/she enrolled for the program concerned. Students who are placed with DGS cannot do a double major in undergraduate programs that require success rating.

     

    (6) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) While accepting students to undergraduate DMP that receives students with aptitude test, the candidate must also be successful in the aptitude test.

     

    (7) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) According to success rating of students, those who are in the quota that is reserved for the applied associate and undergraduate Double Major Program, qualify to register.

     

    (8) The success rating of students that is taken into consideration in their double major applications, is determined according to the GPA at the end of the spring or fall semester of the relevant academic year.

     

    Enrollment

    Article 8- (1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)DMP applications are reviewed, and the decision regarding the admission is finalized by the administrative board of the faculties/schools/vocational schools concerned.  

     

    (2) Students, who qualify to enroll to DMP, need to enroll on the dates announced. Students are not allowed to enroll to more than one DMP at the same time, they can, however, can enroll to DMP and MP at the same time. 

     

    Implementation

    Article 9-(1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) The DMP is implemented in collaboration with the departments/programs concerned.

     

    (2) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)The head of the department in the relevant undergraduate programs and the Vocational School Director in the associate programs assign the DMP coordinator (s) to determine the courses to be taken by the students in the Double Major Program and to assist them in planning the semesters in which these courses will be taken. The DMP coordinator guides the students by communicating with the students’ major program advisor.

     

    (3) The courses, taken by the DMP student in the major program, which are deemed as equivalent, are determined by the “DMP coordinator”. These courses are not included in the GPA and marked as (NI) in double major transcript. Transfer of courses that are deemed equivalent, to the DMP transcript, happens by the approval of the “DMP coordinator”.

     

    (4) The student in the double major program may transfer to DMP on condition that s/he provides the requirements for intra-institutional transfer in the major program.

     

    (5) The course load the student is required to take during a semester is specified in IUE "Regulation for Associate and Undergraduate Degree Education and Examinations”.

     

    Leave of Absence

    Article 10-(1) Students, who defer registration in the major program, are also excused from the second major program.

     

    (2) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) In the event that students fail to renew DMP course registration for the semester due to DMP course(s) not being offered and/or conflicting with other courses, they can be granted a semester leave from the Double Major Program with the decision of the administrative board of the faculty/school/vocational school concerned with the DMP.

     

    Success, Graduation, and Disenrollment

    Article 11- (1) (Changed 18.10.2023 SD 514-C/1) (Change 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) In order for a student to graduate from DMP, his/her cumulative GPA in major program must be 2.72 over 4.00. Students cannot qualify for associate or undergraduate DMP diplomas unless they qualify to graduate from their major programs.

     

    (2) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Students, withdrawing from DMP, can transfer to Minor Program free of quota requirement, on the condition that a Minor Program is available in the respective field and the admission requirements stated in the IUE “Regulation for Minor Programs” are met. In this case, courses taken in DMP, which are in Minor Program instruction plan, are transferred to Minor Program transcript. Successful courses, not included in Minor Program instruction plan, upon the request of the student and approval of the advisor, are transferred to the major program transcript without being included in the GPA, and they are marked as (NI).

     

    (3) A student who withdraws from DMP, may receive Minor Program Certificate if s/he meets all the requirements of a minor program.

     

    (4) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Students can leave DMP at their own request. Successful courses, upon the request of the student, who is dismissed from the program whatever the reason may be, and approval of the advisor, are transferred to the major transcript without being included in the GPA, and they are marked as (NI).

     

    (5) (Changed 18.10.2023 SD 514-C/1)  A student’s cumulative grade point average in major program may drop to 2.50 over 4.00 for one time only. If the student’s cumulative grade point average in major program drops below 2.72 over 4.00 for the second time, the student will be dismissed from DMP.

     

    (6) (Change 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Students, who do not take courses for two consecutive semesters without being granted a leave of absence in the double major program, will be dismissed from the DMP.

     

    Other Provisions

    Article 12- (1) Students in Double Major Program are not charged additional fee for DMP courses as long as they continue their studies in major program.

     

    (2) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Scholarships/discounts of students in DMP continue for 4 years in in associate programs, 7 years in 4-year undergraduate programs starting from the academic year they enrolled in their first major program at a rate their scholarships/discounts were specified. For periods over 4 years in in associate programs, and 7 years in 4-year undergraduate programs, students continuing in DMP, pay for full tuition fee.

     

    (3) Students are charged for DMP courses taken in Summer school. The Board of Trustees determines the fees of the courses offered in Summer School each year.

     

    Repealed Regulation

    Article 13 – (1) The Double Major Program Regulation, which took effect with the decision of the Senate dated 25 April 2002 and numbered 06-2/5, and decision of the Board of Trustees dated 21 May 2002 and numbered 14-B/8, has been repealed.

     

    (Added 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51) Regulation Changes

    Article 13A-(1) These procedures and principles can be changed with the decision of the Senate.

     

    Effectiveness

    Article 14- (1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)This regulation takes effect on the date it is approved by the Senate.

     

    Enforcement

    Article 15-(1) The Rector of the Izmir University of Economics enforces the provisions of this regulation.

     

    Provisional Article 1 -(1) (Deleted 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)

     

    Provisional Article 2-(1) (Changed 10.03.2021 SD 328-A/6-BTD 30.03.2021-51)The provision, “If the student’s cumulative grade point average drops below 2.72 over 4.00 for the second time, the student will be dismissed from DMP” indicated in sub-article 5 of article 11 of this regulation takes effect as of 2020-2021 academic year fall semester. 

     

     

    This regulation took effect with the Senate decision No. 380-A/16, dated 8 January 2020, and the Board of Trustees decision No. 31, dated 15 January 2020.
